February in Pictures

February: 28 of the coldest days of the year,
yet I'm so grateful for the love and beauty that this month revealed!

(I'm also grateful that spring is officially 3 weeks away!)

February 27, 2014 Photo: "Aloha"

Tiny Hawaiians in the Milwaukee Public Market sang to me of their Polynesian homeland

of coconut palms and powdery sand, of salty waves and technicolor sunsets.

Their siren song transported me back...

to the luxurious beaches of Waikiki, where the shadow of Diamond Head
cast just enough shade to shelter me from the tropical sun;

to a cocktail "sailing" cruise...

along the vibrant cliffs of Kauai's Napali Coast...

to the fearful exhilaration of a helicopter without doors...

fluttering amid jagged canyons and cascading waterfalls;

 to shark-startled snorklers and lungs filled with saltwater;

to the lush Fern Grotto where natives serenaded us with Elvis' Hawaiian Wedding Song...

As the savage Polar Vortex continues to punish us with vicious sub-zero temperatures, biting winds, and threats of even more snow, I can't decide whether this mini mental holiday provided brief solace from the wicked Wisconsin winter, or exacerbated my need for a change in latitude.

A hui hou kakou, Hawai'i!

“I believe in pink.
I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner.
I believe in kissing, kissing a lot.
I believe in being strong
when everything seems to be going wrong.
I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls.
I believe that tomorrow is another day
and I believe in miracles.”
~ Audrey Hepburn

"I believe in the restorative power of water,
of music, flowers, high heels, and lipgloss.
I believe that travel transforms your mind and your spirit.
I believe that home is a feeling, not a place.
I believe in vision; in taking time to see,
not only with your eyes, but with your heart.
I believe in sharing your vision, your talents, your gifts...
and I believe in miracles too."
~ Melinda Larson-Horne

Coffee by the fire, a morning at the salon,
shopping and lunch with a friend...
It's amazing how a fresh haircut, a manicure, a new lip gloss,
and a little something sweet can recharge your spirit!
Ah, just what I needed :)

February 19, 2014 Photo: "On Deck!"

Here's to 40° in February!
I'm longing for evenings on the deck:
sipping cold drinks, listening to Jimmy Buffett,
watching the sunset, waiting for the stars...

Well, maybe it needs to be a little bit warmer.

February 18, 2014 Photo: "Le Moment"

Today, I was privy to a lot of interesting information, both professionally and socially. Our favorite local establishment closed five months ago, causing us to speculate what the next incarnation would be. Imagine my excitement this week when the sign was changed to Rendez-vous! Tonight, I met Max, the new Parisian owner, who, in addition to catering to the Lake Country pub scene, is introducing traditional French fare (crepes and galettes, charcuterie, wines, desserts, etc.). Max and I enjoyed our long chat, both having been deprived of authentic French conversation for far too long. My heart sang as the French phrases danced off my tongue and swelled as Max complemented my accent and fluency. Although my new role as Technology Coach is exciting and rewarding, I do still miss my past as a French teacher. I loved my content and I loved my students. These days, I enjoy working with my colleagues and I appreciate their invitations to help out in their classrooms, but it is a big transition. I recognize that my life is evolving and that I need to take Siddhartha's advice: "Don't live in the past, don't dream about the future, concentrate your spirit on the present moment." Nostalgia is bittersweet while anticipation can be both exciting and nerve wracking. If you spend too much time thinking about the past or the future, you miss out on the present. I have used this platform, my photos, and my writing to cherish the past while being open to the future; but above all, to practice truly being present in the fleeting moments that are too important to go unnoticed.

its hidden reasons and reactions are understandable or not." ~ Galileo

Today the relentless winter of 2014 adds another 5-8 inches of snow to our landscape.
It is both beautiful and painful, like the fruit and the thorns of this rose bush.

February 10, 2014 Photo: "Sweet"

It's Valentine's week, so all of my posts are dedicated to the sweetness of this lovely holiday. In fact, if you've been quite observant, you must have noticed that all February posts have featured the lovely crimson hues of Valentine's Day. While the cynical may feel that Valentine's Day is a Hallmark holiday -- the ultimate marketing ploy to boost sales of greeting cards, candy, flowers, and jewelry, I say, "Why not dedicate a day to expressing love for one another?" Actually, a day isn't nearly enough time to show our each other how much we appreciate them, so I'm taking the whole week!

Let's start the week with something sweet! On this bitter Monday morning, I was greeted with a pretty pink and red box waiting cheerful on my desk. Inside was this beautiful pastry, carefully baked and decorated by one of the most generous colleagues I have ever known. I know that Nan is a brilliant, thoughtful, dedicated, and charmingly irreverent person, but I didn't know that she could bake! What a lovely surprise!
