In the fall...

September 22, 2016
September 22, 2016 (266/366) Happy First Day of Fall!

Maybe it's because my life runs on an academic calendar,
but fall really does feel like more of a beginning than an end.

 It's time for:
  • crisp mornings with low-lying fog.
  • clear, starry nights by the fire.
  • brilliant foliage that changes every day.
  • long walks in the woods with the smell and sound of the dried leaves beneath my feet.
  • bundling up in cozy sweaters, scarves, skirts, tights, and comfy boots... I just feel more "me" at this time of year.
  • Sunday afternoon football games.
  • hot cider, coffee, tea, and bold red wines.
  • hearty soups, roasted pumpkin seeds, and apple pie.
  • observing, reflecting, planning, starting over...

Spaces Between...

September 15, 2016
September 15, 2016 (258/366)

"But let there be spaces in your togetherness
and let the winds of the heavens dance between..." ~ Khalil Gibran

Night and day, summer and fall, sleep and consciousness -- times that seem absolute; yet this morning, I feel caught between spaces. The French call the moments between day and night entre chien et loup -- between dog and wolf -- a time when things are unclear, uncertain, unsettling. I feel restless as I simultaneously cling to these waning days of summer and long for the crispness of autumn. This in-between place makes me uncomfortable and challenges me to find meaning. I crave structure, but force myself to leave space for dancing.

Saint Teresa of Calcutta

September 4, 2016 (248/366)

"Not all of us can do great things.
But we can do small things with great love.”
~ Blessed Saint Teresa of Calcutta

"Today, I pass on this emblematic figure of womanhood and of consecrated life to the whole world of volunteers. May she be your model of holiness. We might have some difficulty in calling her "Saint Teresa." With great spontaneity, I think we'll continue to call her, 'Mother Teresa.' Let us carry her smile in our hearts and give that smile to those we meet along our journey, especially those who suffer. In this way, we'll open up so many horizons of joy and hope for our many brothers and sisters who are discouraged and in need of understanding and tenderness." ~ Pope Francis I

Everything is cool when you're part of a team..."
~ Tegan & Sara, The Lego Movie

Inspired by Kid President's video honoring a retiring teacher, the Pewaukee High School Medal of Awesome was created as a fun way to recognized the awesome things that happen in our school. For two years, the medal has passed from adult to kid and back each day, from educator to student to custodian, secretary, lunch lady, etc. Last year, all educators at PHS were awarded our own mini-MOA's to wear along with our badges. These medals remind us that together, we are building a culture of awareness, recognition, and gratitude.

I was honored to start this 2016-2017 school year with the Medal of Awesome and to pass it on to the first student today. Here's how I  made my choice: "Awesome is often defined as extremely impressive or inspiring great admiration, yet it's the little things that regularly happen at PHS -- those small acts of kindness that often go unnoticed -- that make this place truly awesome. Today, I would like to pass the Medal of Awesome to Zenkar. On the first day of school, he lingered for a moment after class just to ask me how to say, 'Have a great day!' in French. What an honor to work with both staff and students who go out of their way to make each other feel welcomed! Today, I wish Z a bonne journée as he wears the Medal of Awesome, and I challenge everyone here at PHS to pay attention to the little things that will make this an awesome year!"
