Feather

Today was one of those almost perfect Wisconsin spring days when the sun is warm enough to tint my arms a delicate pink, highlighting freckles I've had since childhood, and the breeze is cool enough to stay outside far longer than I probably should. I began the day with coffee and reading on the deck, then worked in the garden until returning to the deck for cold glass of crisp Sauvignon Blanc. Between sips, I admired the playful purple and gold finches dancing from tree to tree; their cheerful chirping accompanying the trill of the redwing blackbirds. In addition to our usual avian visitors, a brilliant blue bird perched on the neighbor's swing set before he flew a few laps around our yard. Finally, I watched this downy white feather floating effortlessly on the gentle breeze -- a genuine Forrest Gump moment. Like Forrest says, "I don't know if we each have a destiny, or if we're all just floatin' around accidental-like on a breeze. But I think maybe it's both."
