Education is the Key

Hornets Nest

October 2, 2018 (275/365)

"Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers, water bugs, tadpoles, frogs, mud turtles, elderberries, wild strawberries, acorns, chestnuts, trees to climb, brooks to wade, water lilies, woodchucks, bats, bees, butterflies, various animals to pet, hayfields, pine-cones, rocks to roll, sand, snakes, huckleberries and hornets; and any child who has been deprived of these has been deprived of the best part of education." - Luther Burbank

...well, maybe not snakes or hornets - MLH

On the Horizon

September 4, 2018 (247/365) "You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose." - Dr. Seuss

La Rentrée -- "the reentry" -- I love this French expression for back-to-school. As much as I relish summer's languid pace, September makes me eager for change. As Jordan Baker told Daisy Buchanan, “Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” (F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby). It's hot and humid today, but soon, we'll be enjoying cooler weather, cozy sweaters, fires in the fireplace, hot cider, football games, and the beautiful fall colors. School starts today, and even though I never really left this summer, I am ready for The Reentry. As I begin my 25th year in the Pewaukee School District, I am excited to discover what's on the horizon.

"Through a process grounded in reflection and feedback, the Pewaukee School District Learning Coaches are committed to collaboratively guiding and supporting adult learners in their quest to develop, refine, and hone instructional practices in order to maximize student engagement and achievement." - PSD Learning Coaches' Mission. This week, teachers return to school, I wish them smooth sailing, yet recognize that there will likely be rough seas as well as fair winds. As a coach, I strive to be a lighthouse rather than a lifeboat, reminding myself and others that my job is not to rescue, but instead, help others to find their own way to shore, guiding by example.

Sailing + Photography Lessons

August 8, 2018 (220/365)

"The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails." - William Arthur Ward ...Or the pessimist complains that her iPhone can't capture the beauty of these little prams racing just off-shore. The optimists hopes she can edit her photos to make them clearer and brighter. The realist posts her photos anyway since sailing opties and a photo-a-day challenge are all about learning!

Leadership & Learning

A Lesson

June 27, 2018 (178/365)

"Let your life lightly dance on the edges of Time like dew on the tip of a leaf." -  Rabindranath Tagore

When I teach smartphone photography, I always start with this anecdote: "Once upon a time, a photographer was invited to have dinner at the home of a top chef. During dinner the chef praised the photographer for his work, saying 'Your photos are beautiful! You must have a great camera.' The photographer smiled and nodded politely. After the delicious dinner, the photographer complimented the chef, saying, 'That was an excellent meal. You must have some great pots and pans!'”

The point is that great photos are not just about having the best equipment; they require a skilled eye and often a little luck. I always say that the best camera is the one you have with you. Although I still wish I had had my "good camera" along as I walked Piper this morning, without my phone, I wouldn't have captured these raindrops at all.
