Explore. Dream. Discover.

"Explore. Dream. Discover."

For Christmas, Eric gave me this lovely silver sailboat. It's simple, graceful, and perfect for a girl who enjoys sailing. Yet what I love most about this gift is the idea that accompanies it. Mark Twain reminds us that it is often too easy to stay within the safe harbor of the familiar; to let complacency or fear keep us from challenging ourselves, from stretching, learning, and growing. As we get older, we may lose some of our childish wonder and fearless sense of adventure. One of the things I loved most about my dad was that he never lost his enthusiasm or sense of fun. He eagerly shared his love of nature, especially of water, with my brother and me. Dad worked hard but always made time to play. It was that same sense of wonder and appreciation that attracted me to my husband. Our first date was in Peninsula State Park hiking, climbing the observation tower, and skipping stones on the Bay (only because there wasn't enough wind to go sailing). I hope that wearing this charm will remind me to cast off some of the stress of grown-up responsibilities in order to rediscover the little things and to embark on new adventures: to explore, to dream, to discover!

Warm Woolen Mittens

"Warm Woolen Mittens"

January in Wisconsin can be a winter wonderland or dreary and bone-chilling. On a day like today, I love my Norwegian mittens! They are soft, warm, and the perfect shade of "greige." Putting them on makes me feel instantly cozier! They were a gift from my friend Lisa's mom, Lill, who grew up in Gjesvær, Norway, above the Arctic Circle. These traditional two-toned star, rose, or snowflake patterns called "Selbu" or "Selbuvotten" were first created in 1850. There are now more than 300 registered Selbu patterns! Snowflakes, Norwegian traditions, and these warm, woolen mittens are "a few of my favorite things!"

Lady Slipper

"Lady Slipper" (Cypripoedioideae)

Today was our first day back to work after Christmas vacation. I made every effort to leave school early enough to enjoy a few minutes of sunshine, but after stopping at the bank and the store, I made it home to see only a faint pink hue on the horizon. It's only day 2 of my photo challenge so I'm sure there will be many pictures of blue skies and pink sunsets.

Inside the house, everything was shadowy and quiet. Yesterday, we took down the tree and put away the Christmas decorations. This always feels bittersweet to me. All the sparkling crystal and silver ornaments and the twinkling white lights make our home feel so warm and festive. Yet after all the excitement of the holidays, it does feel nice to put everything away, clean the house, and get a fresh start in the new year. Today, the house seems empty yet tranquil. Without the distraction of the Christmas tree, I am more aware of the quiet beauty. I can focus on subtile details like this lady slipper. Its colors aren't vibrant, yet its hues range from snow white to chartreuse to deep forest green. The petals are both striped and dappled, smooth and fuzzy. Maybe I'm partial to lady slippers because they are the official flower of Door County or maybe it's because I love shoes :)

Happy New Year!

New Year, New Challenge!

Here's to a new challenge! Happy New Year! I have never been one for making traditional resolutions. Although it is always nice to save money, to eat better, or to get in shape, rather than being self-critical, I have always preferred to start the year with positive thoughts, to look forward to new interests, new challenges, and new adventures. Last year, I resolved to appreciate the little things, to capture special moments in photographs. I set up a Tumblr account called  Une chose, One thing. My goal was to post one photo each day - 366 images of 2012. In January, I took random pictures of anything that caught my eye, of things that I found beautiful or interesting. In February, I chose a theme: love. I posted images of hearts, sweets, and flowers just in time for Valentine's Day. In March, I started participating in Fat Mum Slim's Photo-a-day Challenge. The challenge offered suggestions for a photo each day and helped me to focus on a specific subject that was often broad enough to provide freedom of interpretation. Although I succeeded in posting 366 photos, I often recycled photos that weren't actually taken on the day I posted them or even in 2012. This year, I will attempt to feature a photo-a-day right here on my blog. I will make every effort to take a new photo each day, a photo of something that inspired me to stop and take a closer look. I will treat this challenge as an opportunity to slow down, to notice the beauty and inspiration that surrounds us each day if we just take the time to notice. So, here's to 2013!

Snow Day!

Snow days...
Teachers wish for them too!

The forecast was ominous:
6-12 inches of snow
Wind gust up to 45 mph

I woke up early
to watch for school closings
The official call came at 5:30 am

My home felt like a winter wonderland

I had coffee by the Christmas tree

& watched holiday movies
in my jammies

My favorite!  It was a wonderful snow day!
