Summer Supper

July 17, 2013 Photo of the day: "Summer Supper"
On tonight's menu: Shrimp Quesadillas

I marinated & sautéed shrimp in tequila, lime juice,
olive oil, garlic, a little chile powder, salt, & pepper.
The rest is just layering of nice fresh ingredients:
Limes, green onions, cilantro, cheese, flour tortillas
A nice light supper for a  95° day!

Garden Guests

July 16, 2013 Photo of the day: "Garden Guests"

Remember this "weed" that I blogged about in May? It is invading the mulch in my north garden bed. After a Google search, I've learned that the green leaves are Oxalis stricta, the common yellow wood sorrel, or lemon clover. It tends to grow in woodlands and meadows as both perennials and annuals. The browner or burgundy leafed variety is Oxalis corniculata, creeping wood sorrel or Sleeping Beauty.  Some nurseries even sell it for ground cover. Unless they start to crowd out my other plants, these tiny guests are a pleasant addition to perennial garden. Actually, I read that the leaves of wood sorrel are edible with a tangy lemon flavor, and a drink, rich in vitamin C, can be made by infusing the leaves in hot water for about 10 minutes, sweetening and then chilling. Hmmm...I think I'll pass.

All is calm...

July 15, 2013 Photo of the day: "All is calm..."

This morning, I was an hour early for a meeting at school, so took my coffee and sat on a bench across from Pewaukee Lake. Within hours on this 90°day, the beach would be packed with families and former students seeking refuge from the oppressive humidity. But at 7:30 am, all was calm. The lake's placid surface was only gently disquieted by one woman's white bathing cap and rhythmic backstroke. She swam back and forth unfazed by a lone seagull screeching at her from his perch on a swim maker.

Friends and family know that I have a hard time quieting my mind. I am always planning, reflecting, absorbing, analyzing. I rarely sit quietly, choosing instead to read, listen to music, update my social media... My intention this morning was to walk along the beach and find something to photograph for my Project 365. Instead, I sat sipping my coffee, just enjoying the calm. Before I left for my meeting, I took a single photo.

Happy Bastille Day!

I wish I were in France to celebrate, but Milwaukee
hosts a great 4-day party in Cathedral Square.

Last night's wedding also honored
the French National Holiday
with wine & macarons!

Joyeuse Fête nationale à tous

Breath of Heaven

July 12, 2013 Photo of the day: "In Irons"

For weeks, I have been "in irons,"
facing directly into the wind,
stuck, unable to move forward.

Today, I believe that I was finally
able to free myself,
to fall off again and recover,
to adjust my sails and find the wind.

It is useless and damaging to sail against the wind,
but when properly adjusted and allowed to find
"the great breath of heaven,"
this tiny vessel will soar
and seek new, brighter horizons.

"If we're caught without wind in our sails, we'll be captive.
We may never find the gift which is ourselves...
or find out who we truly are."

"...the only matter of consequence before me
is what I will do with my allotted time.
I can remain on shore, paralyzed with fear,
or I can raise my sails and dip and soar in the breeze."
