Petite Posters: Jules Chéret and Le Courrier français

“Look at that! It’s from the Turn of the Century. Isn’t it beautiful? It’s my favorite era. I love it so much. Everything was so perfect. I’m telling you that the Golden Age was the Belle Époque — it’s the greatest, most beautiful era Paris has ever know.” - Adriana (Marion Cotillard), Midnight in Paris

“When spring came, even false spring, there were no problems except where to be happiest.” - Ernest Hemingway

It can’t be a coincidence that today is the first day of spring, National Happiness Day (Why is there just one day?), and La Journée internationale du macaron!

A Pound of Lavender

“It was our favorite part of the day, this in-between time, and it always seemed to last longer than it should--a magic and lavender space unpinned from the hours around it, between worlds.” - Paula McLain, The Paris Wife

Have I mentioned that I received a pound of lavender for Christmas? I do love the color, fragrance, and taste of lavender, but I’m wondering what I will do with all of it. So far, I’ve filled decorative dishes with the dried buds to perfume the air in the living room and bedroom. I was thinking of filling some sachets for my drawers and closets. I already have lavender simple syrup for tea, lemonade, and cocktails. Any suggestions? Merci en avance!

Bûche de Noël

The bûche de Noël at le Rêve (“A modern twist on the traditional French Yule Log: Cheesecake mousse with pistachio crémeux, vanilla bavarois, and morello cherry cream” garnished with pistachios and snowflake cookies) is pretty and delicious, but if you’d like a sweet treat without the calories, check out the 2018 most beautiful bûches de Noël in Paris.

"Colorful, inventive posters advertising Paris’s many entertainment venues, products, department stores, and more in the late nineteenth century made their maker, the French artist Jules Chéret (1836–1932), famous. His work in color lithography, which was previously used for commercial printing, transformed printmaking into a medium that artists today still see as rich for experimentation. This exhibition features highlights from the gift of nearly six hundred Chéret posters to the Museum from local collectors James and Susee Wiechmann. (via
