Prickly

"So it is with life. Those thorns, the prickly problems of life, cause us to strive to rise above them and then, as we do, we learn. We learn to exercise true compassion, true kindness - or the thorns, if we let them, cause us to brood, to mourn over our trials. Then we plant the seeds of bitterness, hate, and ruin - weeds. We may reach up for the rose or down to the weeds...." - James Michael Pratt

I felt prickly this morning as I glared at myself the mirror with a critical eye: I looked and felt vapid. Despite my dull appearance, my nerves were raw. I struggled to maintain my oft-lauded patience as my colleagues complained about technology,  dismissing my suggestions in favor of "old school" solutions. Perhaps it's this incessant winter: day after day of frigid temperatures, slippery roads, the same boots, skirts, scarves, and tights that make up my winter wardrobe....

And then it occurred to me that today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of forty solemn days of self-reflection and self-deprivation. Yet rather than further depriving my already dull spirit, rather than giving up sweets or television, why not give up negative behaviors?  This afternoon, I read an article suggesting 20 Things Worth Giving Up for Lent, twenty things that would ultimately improve my own life and the lives of others, not only for 40 days but forever. It makes so much sense to give up fear of failure, guilt, envy, impatience, resentment, blame, gossip, comparison, doubt, excuses, worry, self-pity -- behaviors that stand in the way of my ability to share my time and talents, to be fully present and productive. So, today, I begin a Lenten commitment to forgo negativity; to "reach up for the rose" rather than getting bogged down in the weeds; to choose faith in God, in the goodness of others, in myself.

Consideration

March 3, 2014 Photo (061/365): "Consideration for the Carnation"

"The fairest flowers o' the season. Are our Carnations..." - William Shakespeare, Winter's Tale, Act IV,  Scene 4

In episode 606 of Sex and the City, the ladies discuss "deal-breakers." Carrie declares she'd never date a man who wears boat shoes (Incidentally, I have probably never dated a guy who didn't). Charlotte is disappointed by men who offer her carnations, and I must admit that I, too, considered them "filler flowers." But today, the light and the shadows dancing among the folds of these delicate petals made me realize that maybe Carrie was right after all, that "carnations are making a comeback." Carrie declared her affection for pink carnations, but as with most flowers, I prefer white. In the Victorian language of flowers, carnations declared: "You're the only one" and  "The sun is always shining when I'm with you." White carnations symbolized the sweet and lovely, as well as pure love. So perhaps, it is time to offer consideration for the simple carnation.

Brunch

It's a tradition. Lake Park Bistro is my favorite place to celebrate my birthday (well, outside of Paris, of course)!

A table by the window...

Champagne...

...and traditional French fare.

Today's choice: Tarte au chèvre & crème brûlée

...in Milwaukee's historic Lake Park.

Green

March and I have a complicated relationship. On one hand, it's no longer February, hence another month closer to spring. Yet, unlike most people, I really don't mind February. It's a short month filled with celebration (La Chandeleur, Valentine's Day, often Mardi Gras, and my birthday). There are hearts and flowers everywhere reminding us to show our loved ones how much we appreciate them. In case you hadn't noticed, during the month of February, I challenged myself to post photos featuring the beautiful crimson hues of Valentine's Day. It was both fun and daunting, so I'm happy to change my perspective now that we are entering a new month. My initial plan for March was green, a bit of the luck o' the Irish and hopeful, the verdant shades of spring...but who are we kidding? In Wisconsin, March is really just 31 more days of winter. Tradition holds that if March comes "in like a lion," it will go "out like a lamb." Today's high temperature was 12º, we got another 2" of snow, and the only green I could find were these hydrangeas at Trader Joe's...so here's hoping!

February in Pictures

February: 28 of the coldest days of the year, yet I'm so grateful for the love and beauty that this month revealed!

(I'm also grateful that spring is officially 3 weeks away!)
