Since my own white tulips didn't bloom this year…

Today was one of those almost perfect Wisconsin spring days when the sun is warm enough to tint my arms a delicate pink, highlighting freckles I've had since childhood, and the breeze is cool enough to stay outside far longer than I probably should. I began the day with coffee and reading on the deck, then worked in the garden until returning to the deck for cold glass of crisp Sauvignon Blanc. Between sips, I admired the playful purple and gold finches dancing from tree to tree; their cheerful chirping accompanying the trill of the redwing blackbirds. In addition to our usual avian visitors, a brilliant blue bird perched on the neighbor's swing set before he flew a few laps around our yard. Finally, I watched this downy white feather floating effortlessly on the gentle breeze -- a genuine Forrest Gump moment. Like Forrest says, "I don't know if we each have a destiny, or if we're all just floatin' around accidental-like on a breeze. But I think maybe it's both."

I started my day with a long walk on Marquette's campus to reflect on the morning's peaceful beauty. Our late spring has postponed the blossoming trees that I remember from my own senior week, but the yellow tulips against the azure sky proudly declare, "We are Marquette!"

Sometimes you have to look deep within yourself to find your own strength and beauty.
