Black and White

November 1, 2016 (305/365)

“Colour is everything, black and white is more.” – Dominic Rouse, photographer

November naturally represents an absence of color as the world turns brown and gray and the days get shorter and darker. Natural light becomes a precious commodity while artificial light distorts color and clarity. Last year, I recognized that I have often struggled with my November photographs as my work day begins and ends in darkness. So, rather than bemoaning these limitations, I am again embracing the lack of color by featuring only black and white images. When a day fails to present me with an interesting or beautiful subject, I will search my archives for previously-rejected images that can be improved by stripping them of color and focusing on light (natural and artificial), shadow, texture and composition. As Elliott Erwitt said, “Color is descriptive. Black and white is interpretive.”

Happy Halloween!

October 31, 2017 (304/365)

"Cinderella is proof that a new pair of shoes can change your life."

Today's the day to channel your inner princess, pirate, monster, or witch. Put on the costumes and the make up, light the jack-o-lanterns and play festive music (I love Pandora's Halloween Party station!), indulge in treats, and maybe even do a few tricks; for tomorrow,  it's back to reality as Mother Nature turns back into the proverbial pumpkin and the magic of October gives way to the solemnity of November.

One Last Peak

One last peak before today's wind blows the rest of the colors away.

Does Tricks for Treats!

October 29, 2017 (302/365)

Charles Schulz once said, "Snoopy didn't start out as beagle; it's just that beagle is a funny word." Obviously, beagles are my favorite dogs. They are sweet and cute and infuriatingly stubborn, but can you image Snoopy (or Piper) any other way?!

It has been a fun Halloween weekend -- carving Peanuts jack-o-lanterns (without a pattern), roasting pumpkin seeds, enjoying the Delafield festivities, handing out candy and pumpkin doggie treats to trick or treaters, and of course, the annual viewing of It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

Pumpkins & Beagles

"You kept me up all night waiting for the Great Pumpkin and all that came was a beagle!"

- Sally Brown, It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

[Tonight at the Delafield Fall Fest, there were plenty of great pumpkins and beagles!]

I think Piper wants to try Trick or Treating too!

And the best costume goes to this little guy!
