Fall Back

November 5, 2017 (309/365)

“An extra yawn one morning in the springtime, an extra snooze one night in the autumn is all that we ask in return for dazzling gifts. We borrow an hour one night in April; we pay it back with golden interest five months later.” - Winston Churchill

French Friday: Degas to Picasso

le 3 novembre 2017 (307/365)

“Il faut être absolument moderne.” - Arthur Rimbaud

"Beginning in the nineteenth century, Paris became the center of modern art. Artists from around the world gathered in its studios, galleries, salons, and museums and began charting a new course in art. They moved away from traditional subjects and styles in favor of experimentation and abstraction." - Degas to Picasso: Creating Modernism in France at the Milwaukee Art Museum. Today, I got a sneak peak at the latest installation at the Milwaukee Art Museum. The exhibit features 150 paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures by Manet, Van Gogh, Delacroix, Cézanne, Cassatt, Chagall, Pissaro, Picasso, and others, showcasing the evolution of modern art from Impressionism through Cubism.

No photography allowed in the exhibit. Don't worry, I Googled these!

All Soul's Day

November 2, 2017 (306/365)

"Because of their holy love for You, they also care for me and my family, friends, and neighbors. Thank You for the gift of their love and the witness of their holy lives. I ask our patrons and every saint who has become dear to me to intercede for us..." - A Prayer for All Saints Day

Beginning with the Feast of All Saints (November 1st) and the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls’ Day - November 2nd), a centuries-old tradition calls for remembering our deceased family and friends in prayer for the entire month of November. It is a such comfort that Marquette provides students, staff, and alumni an opportunity to offer prayers for departed loved ones to be placed before the altars in campus Chapels throughout the month. This year, I have asked that the Marquette community pray for my Mom as she has joined my Dad in Heaven.

Black and White

November 1, 2016 (305/365)

“Colour is everything, black and white is more.” – Dominic Rouse, photographer

November naturally represents an absence of color as the world turns brown and gray and the days get shorter and darker. Natural light becomes a precious commodity while artificial light distorts color and clarity. Last year, I recognized that I have often struggled with my November photographs as my work day begins and ends in darkness. So, rather than bemoaning these limitations, I am again embracing the lack of color by featuring only black and white images. When a day fails to present me with an interesting or beautiful subject, I will search my archives for previously-rejected images that can be improved by stripping them of color and focusing on light (natural and artificial), shadow, texture and composition. As Elliott Erwitt said, “Color is descriptive. Black and white is interpretive.”
