Idling

July 18, 2016 (200/366)

"Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under the trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the blue sky, is by no means waste of time."

- John Lubbock, "Recreation," The Use of Life, 1894

Landscaping: Green & White Garden

July 16, 2016 (198/366)

As I've mentioned, we love our new home and were thrilled with the updates that were made inside the house; however, the landscaping was minimal -- a cross between a blank canvas and a clean-up/demolition. We're taking it slowly, starting with the front entrance, a fence around the backyard for Piper, and this new, green and white garden. We still have to place stone steppers around the fire pit, but we're almost finished...for now. Next summer, we'll tackle the woods in the back and the dreaded orange ditch lilies.

Nice

July 15, 2016 (197/366) Nice

I have many fond memories of trips to Nice: of strolling down the Promenade des Anglais searching for sea glass; of swimming in the Mediterranean before dozing off upon the smooth galets; of the worst sunburn of my life (maybe not such a fond memory); of celebrating Mardi gras with students in 2009; of visits to the Russian Orthodox church and the Matisse museum; of Provençal fabric, the perfume of homemade soaps and freshly cut flowers, and the taste of lavender ice cream, white peaches and garinguettes in the markets of Old Nice. Once again, my heart goes out to the people of France.
