French Friday: Les Crêpes

February 2, 2018 (033/365) • Groundhog Day | La Chandeleur

« À la Chandeleur, l'hiver cesse ou reprend vigueur; Chandeleur couverte, quarante jours de perte. »

I definitely prefer the French holiday and its tradition of eating crêpes to our American Groundhog Day. Yet la Chandeleur also comes with weather predictions:  "On Candlemas, winter ends or strengthens; If covered with snow, forty days to go." It's almost like waiting for the groundhog to see his shadow, but much more delicious!

Mini Month

February 1, 2018 (032/365) "They are not long, the days of wine and roses..." - Ernest Dowson... in fact, they are only twenty-eight -- a "mini-month!"

Although many dread another month of darkness and cold winter weather, I rejoice in these twenty-eight days of pretty crimson hues, of hearts and flowers and beautiful snowscapes, punctuated by celebrations of la Chandeleur, the Winter Olympics, Mardi gras, Valentine's Day, and my birthday -- the exclamation point at the end of this lovely month!
