Hope Springs

March 24, 2015 {83/365}  "Hope springs..."

"Springtime is the land awakening. The March winds are the morning yawn." - Lewis Grizzard

After a few days of warm temperatures and sunshine, it feels like winter has returned this week with snow flurries, temperatures struggling to exceed freezing, and biting March winds. Yet upon careful observation, signs of spring, like these tiny, delicate columbine leaves, are indeed beginning to emerge!

Piper's Page

March 23, 2015 {82/365} National Puppy Day!

It's National Puppy Day, "the cutest day of the year" (as proclaimed by an email from PetSmart)! In honor of the supreme cuteness, Piper has taken over her own page of this blog (linked on the menu bar above). Every day, she will share a photo taken by the paparazzi (aka "Mommy"), along with a caption in her own words. Stop by each day for your daily dose of beagle babble because every day is Puppy Day chez Larson-Horne!

Cameras

March 22, 2015 {81/365} Vintage Cameras

In all the excitement about the arrival of Mademoiselle Piper, I neglected to share some of my great birthday gifts. As I've mentioned, I am intrigued by vintage cameras and typewriters, as both tools of creativity and works of art. I'm especially attracted to the 1940's models. I love their clean lines, and I like to image the cultural and historical moments that they've captured.

Eric found this awesome Zeiss Ikon.

Lynn and John, my in-laws, gave me this gorgeous Brownie.

I'm still playing with where to include these treasures in our home. For now, the Brownie sits on the mantle, repeating the lines of the Frank Lloyd Wright clock on the armoire. The Zeiss is on the sofa table next to framed sketches of a vintage camera and typewriter (also gifts from Lynn).

French Friday: Le Jour du Macaron

20 mars 2015 {79/365} « Jour du Macaron »

March 20 is the Jour du Macaron in Paris. Ten years ago, pâtissier Pierre Hermé chose to celebrate the first day of spring by offering his famous macarons as a free treat. Customers are encouraged to make a charitable donation on their way out the door. Tempting flavors for spring 2010 include white truffle with grilled hazelnut and foie gras with chocolate, along with traditional favorites like coffee, caramel, and three kinds of vanilla. But Hermé isn't the only one sharing his cookies this year, Jean-Paul Hévin and Sadaharu Aoki are also taking part. Bon macaron!

Free macarons on March 20 at these participating pastry shops:

  • Pierre Hermé: six locations, including 4 rue Cambon in the 1st arrondissement, 72 rue Bonaparte in the 6th arrondissement, 133 avenue des Champs Elysées in the 8th arrondissement (inside the Publicis drugstore), 40 boulevard Haussmann in the 9th arrondissement (inside the Galeries Lafayette), 185 rue de Vaugirard in the 15th arrondissement, and 58 avenue Paul Doumer in the 16th arrondissement.

  • Sadaharu Aoki: three locations, including 56 boulevard de Port Royal in the 5th arrondissement, 35 rue de Vaugirard in the 6th arrondissement, and 40 boulevard Haussmann in the 9th arrondissement (inside the Galeries Lafayette).

  • Jean-Paul Hévin: four locations, including 3 rue Vavin in the 6th arrondissement, 231 rue Saint-Honoré in the 1st arrondissement, 23 bis avenue de la Motte Picquet in the 7th arrondissement, and 40 boulevard Haussmann in the 9th arrondissement (inside the Galeries Lafayette).

  • Laurent Duchêne: 2 rue Wurtz in the 13th arrondissement.

  • Arnaud Larher: two locations, including 53 rue Caulaincourt and 57 rue Damrémont, both in the 18th arrondissement.

Here in Milwaukee, we can celebrate by visiting Le Rêve

Today's I received a special home made macaron:

The lovely girl in the middle discovered macarons when I took her and several other Pewaukee students to Paris in 2013.

Abby's lovely raspberry macarons were délicieux

Texture

"Texture is the most enduring and ubiquitous underpinning of form...a calming, meditative, appealing world for both the eye and mind." - Lynda Lehmann. Is art imitating life or life imitating art?
