Apples

On the Horizon

September 4, 2018 (247/365) "You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose." - Dr. Seuss

La Rentrée -- "the reentry" -- I love this French expression for back-to-school. As much as I relish summer's languid pace, September makes me eager for change. As Jordan Baker told Daisy Buchanan, “Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” (F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby). It's hot and humid today, but soon, we'll be enjoying cooler weather, cozy sweaters, fires in the fireplace, hot cider, football games, and the beautiful fall colors. School starts today, and even though I never really left this summer, I am ready for The Reentry. As I begin my 25th year in the Pewaukee School District, I am excited to discover what's on the horizon.

Il dolce far niente

September 3, 2018 (246/365) Each year, right before the first day of school, I celebrate the sweetness of doing nothing -- one day to read, sip tea, watch movies, knit, nap, whatever I want. My BFF is happy to share the delicious idleness...and she's really good at it!

You MUST Go Home Again!

September 1, 2018 (244/365) • Marquette Alumni Regatta

They say, "You can't go home again," yet, I've always felt that home is a feeling more than a place. Ann Mah, states it perfectly in The Lost Vintage: “I had spent enough time in France to know that the words chez moi meant something a thousand times more profound than one's current home. Chez moi was the place your parents came from, or maybe even the region of your parents' parents. The food you ate at Christmas, your favorite kind of cheese, your best childhood memories of summer vacation -- all of these derived from chez moi. And even if you had never lived there, chez moi was knitted into your identity; it colored the way you viewed the world and the way the world viewed you.” (Mah, The Lost Vintage). I feel this way about Sturgeon Bay, about Paris, and about Marquette -- especially the Marquette University Sailing Team (MUST). Today's Alumni Regatta was almost rained out, but we got there in time to see the new fleet sail home.
